U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS – Governor Albert Bryan Jr. issued the following statement Monday mourning the passing of former Director of the Virgin Islands Department of Tourism and popular radio personality Leona Bryant:

“The Virgin Islands has lost one of its brightest lights with the passing of Leona Bryant. She was more than an icon—she was a cultural ambassador, a trailblazer, and a shining example of what it means to love these islands. Her contributions, her passion, and her tireless work will forever be remembered and cherished by all of us who call the Virgin Islands home.

“Leona’s story began on Garden Street, where, as a young girl, she welcomed cruise ship visitors into her home with the same hospitality that would later define her remarkable career. She made history as the first Virgin Islander, woman, and Black person to serve as tourism director, and she paved the way for future generations. Whether she was captivating audiences on her popular “Leona” radio show or elevating our culture on the global stage, she embodied the very best of who we are as a people.

“Her impact on tourism was groundbreaking. She didn’t just promote the Virgin Islands; she made the world fall in love with our home. From collaborating with Vogue International to championing our steel bands after Hurricane Hugo, Leona had an unmatched ability to connect our culture with the global community. Leaders from around the world admired her work, and so did we.

But Leona was more than her accomplishments. She was a woman of deep compassion who never hesitated to amplify the voices of those who needed it most. Whether she was inviting someone to share their story on her show or mentoring those around her, she reminded us all of the power of grace and humanity.

“On behalf of the people of the Virgin Islands, I extend my deepest condolences to her daughters, her grandchildren—including our Commissioner of Tourism Joe Boschulte—and the entire Bryant family. We share in your grief and celebrate the incredible life of a woman who gave so much to all of us.

“Leona Bryant’s legacy will continue to inspire us to be better, to dream bigger, and to love our islands as fiercely as she did. May she rest in eternal peace.”
