Offering condolences to the family and friends of the late U.S. Senator and two-time presidential contender John McCain, U.S. Virgin Islands Governor Kenneth E. Mapp has ordered all flags to be flown at half-staff at Government House and upon all public buildings and grounds throughout the Territory until sunset on the day of Senator McCain’s interment.
McCain, an American war hero and lifelong public servant who served in the U.S. Navy as well as the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate, died Saturday at the age of 81 after a year-long battle with brain cancer.
“The nation has lost a towering political icon, one of the last of his kind. May he rest in peace,” said Governor Mapp, who also urged owners of private buildings in the Territory to fly their flags at half-staff in honor of “this remarkable public servant”.
