U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS—Governor Albert Bryan Jr. today issued the following statement expressing his deepest condolences on the passing of Alvin McBean, a beloved and iconic figure in the United States Virgin Islands’ baseball community:
“Alvin McBean’s legacy as a cornerstone in our local baseball history will forever be etched in our hearts.
“McBean played an instrumental role in shaping the landscape of baseball in the US Virgin Islands. His unwavering commitment to Little League and invaluable contributions to our community’s youth baseball programs have left an indelible mark on generations of aspiring athletes.
“For 34 dedicated years, Alvin McBean served as a valued employee of what was then known as the Bureau of Recreation, now recognized as the Department of Sports Parks and Recreation. His dedication and passion for the development of sports and recreation in our islands were truly commendable, and his legacy within the department will continue to inspire future generations.
“Notably, he was a former professional baseball pitcher who spent the majority of his illustrious career with the Pittsburgh Pirates. His remarkable contributions to the world of professional baseball have earned him the respect and admiration of fans and fellow athletes alike. McBean’s legacy as a pioneer and role model in the sport will be remembered with deep gratitude and profound respect.
