Governor Kenneth E. Mapp expressed his condolences today to the family, friends and many fans of acclaimed singer and civil rights activist, Aretha Franklin.
Franklin, who passed away early Wednesday, was known internationally as the Queen of Soul and had 40 Grammy nominations during her more than six decade career in music. She performed at the inaugural events of three U.S. presidents – Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.
“Few people have impacted so many through their artistry,” Governor Mapp said. “I have been a lifelong fan of Aretha Franklin and I was deeply saddened to learn of her passing. Her music moved so many and her performances were legendary.”
Governor Mapp said he joins the millions of others around the world paying tribute today to the iconic entertainer and civil rights leader.
“Aretha Franklin’s music remains uplifting and inspiring,” the Governor said. “Though she has passed away, she has left us with so much.”
